Pompeii

After Vesuvius we went on to Pompeii and we had a guided tour there which was great but it was so unbelievably hot out and there was very little shade. There are a lot of photos in this post so if that's not your thing you might want to skip ahead to Pompeii X Rated

We started off looking at some public places like this amphitheatre and then went through a rich persons house where you could still see their wall frescos.

All the streets had pictures instead of names which I thought was nice.

They also had pavements with stepping stones so their residents didn't have to walk in the dirty street.

There were some fountains around the place, some had been made to work again but some were just decorative.

This was a bakery.

A mosaic in the porch of someone's house.

This was the main forum area, kinda like their version of the village square, you can see Vesuvius looming ominously in the background.

This was a room in the baths which were apparently free for the citizens to use.

All the decorations were well preserved still so it didn't take a lot of imagination to see how things used to be.

This was a fast food place, food was kept in bowls that went in the holes you see on the counter, both hot and cold, there were tons of fast food places around which was kind of funny to think of all the ancient citizens of Pompeii loving the fast food.

A little dog mosaic I enjoyed.

There were only three bodies we could see and you couldn't see them closely.

They were plaster casts.

I would have liked more people to look at.

All in all it was really nice to look round and it must have looked great in its hay day... you know... before the horrific deaths.

The boyfriend and I decided to have an icy lemon slushy to cool off as it's the region of limoncello.

Outside there was a portly gladiator strutting his stuff, smoking, making calls on his mobile and trying to convince tourists to pay to have their photo with him round all the souvenir stalls.
